Information
What is TSH?
TSH stands for Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. The TSH test helps identify whether you have an overactive or underactive thyroid state.
Why test our TSH levels?
The TSH measures the body's thryoid hormone output level of the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormone is critically important to a person's good health. This essential hormone controls the body's metabolic rate of body tissues and is the hormone needed for normal growth and maturation. The TSH test detects imbalances in thyroid gland hormone output. A thyroid hormonal imbalance can result in an overactive or underactive metabolic state. Either of these conditions can cause serious health problems requiring professional medical treatment.
Who should take a TSH test?
A TSH test is indicated for a person of any age, male or female who suspects he/she may be hypothyroid due to experiencing, among other conditions, persistent signs and symptoms of lethargy, sluggishness, excess weight, dry and itchy skin, thinning hair, splitting nails, slow thought, slurred speech or slow growth. Co-morbidties to hypothyroidism can also be diabetes and cardiovascular problems.
A TSH test is also indicated for a person of any age, male or female who suspects he/she may be hyperthyroid due to experiencing, among other conditions, persistent signs and symptoms of headaches, irritability, nervousness, severe weight loss, sweating, tachycardia, increased bowel motility, psychosis, seizure, fever angina pectoris, congestive heart failure, shock, arrhythmias or thyroid storm.
What is the TSH testing procedure?
The specimen collection process is quick, easy and virtually painless. Using the special lancet (included in the Biosafe Blood Collection Kit), a couple of drops of blood are taken from a nick of a finger and deposited into a special collection device called a BTS (Blood Transport System). The BTS is then sent to Biosafe Laboratories for analysis. Biosafe tests your blood sample to see how much TSH is present and then mails the results back to you in an easy-to-read, understandable report.
Since the Biosafe TSH test produces a numerical result rather than a simple "yes" or "no" answer, both the testing approval and professional review of test results are required by a licensed physician. Biosafe has developed a nationwide network of medical doctors for this purpose.
Why use the Biosafe TSH test kit?
Biosafe is one of the leaders in medical diagnostic test kits for at home or in office use. Each of Biosafe's test kits has been FDA approved and all tests are processed at the Biosafe CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) approved laboratory to insure the accuracy of the results. Biosafe has designed each of its test kits so that they are easy enough to be self administered, thus allowing you to use the test kit in the privacy of your home or office. Simply take a test sample, mail the sample to the Biosafe laboratory (pre-paid return mailer included with kit), and within 72 hours of receiving your sample, Biosafe will contact you with your results.
NOTE: A TSH test should be considered only one part of your overall health maintenance program.
